The city of Jeffersonville organized its first bucket brigade in 1835. Events at the time such as the Great Chicago Fire and many other large fires may have urged the city council , in 1871, to pass an ordinance calling for the department's organization as a professionalized career fire company. Today, operating from four stations and serving residents in over 50 square miles, the Jeffersonville Fire Department utilizes 70 full time employees to deliver a wide range of services. The services fall into four general categories of Administration, Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention, and Emergency Medical Services. This year the department will respond to well over 2500 requests for emergency service, perform several thousand fire and safety inspections, and provide multiple public safety education programs. At year end 2008 the department responded to 2289 runs. Of those 2289 runs 17% were fires , 52% EMS response, 11% hazardous materials, 11% alarm activation, 9% misc other (service calls). . |
